Enthusiasts of the battle royale's highly fluid movement can rejoice to discover that an innovative traversal feature will be introduced when Season 27: Amped goes live on Nov. 4. Unveiling The Mantle Boost Named "Momentum Boosting" by the developers, this ability provides gamers a burst of propulsion when scaling ledges and walls. According to lead battle royale designer Eric Canavese, Mantle Boosting has unofficially existed of the game for quite a while, often called as "mantle jumping." However it's challenging for casual gamers, and typically employed by pro gamers in Ranked Mode or tournaments. In this update, Respawn simplifies the process for players of all skill levels to execute these tricky speed-boosts. "Mantle Boosts existed in the game for a while, but executing it requires skill to pull off and a player would never know it's possible without outside knowledge," Canavese states. "We're adding a Mantle Boost indicator so players can clearly identify when and how to trigger the high-octane traversal skill, opening up the mechanic and adding fresh strategies to compete for more players." Why Make It Accessible Why make a once niche movement quirk accessible to all players? Principal designer Josh Mohan says the team aims for gamers to feel powerful — even those who are inexperienced. "[The playerbase] performs other crazy stuff like super-gliding and tap-strafes, and we examined at our competition, observed what the community are doing, and we said, 'How can we provide some of this power to more players?'" Mohan explains. "Because right now, some of these advanced [movement] mechanics are somewhat awkward to access — it requires to change controls and hit precise timings. We proposed, 'How about we make a more official implementation?'" The Amped Update Movement Focus Mobility is primarily the central theme in Season 27, with Legends Horizon, the defensive specialist, and the aerial combatant all getting buffs to help keep them in motion. Recovery time on Horizon's Gravity Lift is shorter, and the Gravity Lift will propel users upward much quicker than before. Her defensive walls now include a roof and the ability to grant movement bonuses to those nearby. However it's the high-flying Valkyrie who's getting the most attention now, with various adjustments applied to make her stronger, faster, and more lethal. "In my opinion many agree that Valkyrie's time is here," states Legend designer the designer. "There's no doubt that she's been dominant previously, but with the introduction of other characters, movement[-based] passives, and Evac Towers, it seemed like she's not very relevant in today's the game. It was an ideal chance for us to revisit a bunch of aspects [of her kit] and sort of bring her back to former prominence." Valkyrie's Upgrades To restore her competitive status in the game's meta, the developer says Respawn assessed all her skills and implemented significant changes. Her VTOL Jets have been upgraded, increasing her speed while airborne, and this equipment regenerates much quicker, enabling her to spend more time aloft. She can no longer take damage from her ultimate ability, which was enhanced to tag enemies who are hit from it. Her squad redeploy ability — which launches her entire squad skyward for repositioning or escape — now takes much less time to fire up. She's also getting some new perk choices that players can choose to conserve resources, expand the spread of her rockets, or accelerate her Skyward Dive activation. "Valkyrie's equipment now delivers on the pilot experience," he says. Olympus Improvements Additionally, the lone airborne map, this location, is getting a mobility-focused overhaul, with an extensive redesign that expands bottlenecks and makes securing elevated positions a bit less daunting. Respawn state Apex Legends Season 27 focuses on providing gamers the resources required to compete in the competition. "Essentially, we were looking at Apex's core identity as a fast-paced FPS," explains principal designer Josh Mohan. Apex Legends Season 27: Amped releases November 4th at 10 a.m. PST/1 p.m. EST.
