Eurovision Was Traditionally a Lighthearted Spectacle – Yet It Has Transformed Into a Strategic Method to Sanitize Conflict.

A recent acronym came to light a couple of months after the start of the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Labeled WCNSF, it stands for “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This designation is specific to Gaza, according to health professionals including child health specialists. Typically, it is uncommon for physicians to attend to a child who has been bereaved of their entire family. But, there has been nothing “normal” about the devastating conflict in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been obliterated and the number of child amputees surpasses that of anywhere else in the world. No sense of normalcy about scores of doctors returning from a devastated terrain with testimonies of children being deliberately targeted.

A Hell on Earth Regardless of a Supposed Ceasefire

Gaza remains hell on earth. Vital medicines and equipment are being blocked those in need, and major human rights organizations contend that atrocities are continuing. The Israeli government disputes these accusations, consistent with how it denies all charges it is implicated in. But while grieving children who lost parents are now suffering from the cold in temporary shelters, there is some ostensibly positive news: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from pursuing its stated mission of “unity and artistic sharing.” The contest will continue to extend a welcoming platform for Israel, even though several European countries have now boycotted in dissent. Because this, it seems, is what global togetherness resembles.

Historically, Eurovision prohibited Russia from participating in 2022 over the “grave situation in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza seems completely different.

Contradictory Principles

Disregard the reality that Israel was criticized for irregular participation methods last year in what appears to have been an attempt to manipulate Eurovision. Ignore the report that a three-year-old girl was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Pay no mind to the evidence that settler violence and coerced removal in the West Bank have escalated. Forget the fact that foreign reporters are still prevented from independent reporting in Gaza. None of this, apparently, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.

The Contest Continues Against a Backdrop of Staggering Tragedy

Eurovision marks seven decades next year – almost double the average life expectancy of someone in Gaza now. The broadcast will air, but it will never be able to restore the whimsical pleasure it historically embodied. A competition that was originally built on harmony has now become a cynical way to sanitize military aggression.
