Three police officers were killed and at least 15 additional individuals were hurt in what appears to be deliberate blast caused by gas at a country home in the northern part of Italy.

Sequence of Events

The explosion was triggered as police and firefighters went into the residence near Verona to carry out an removal notice for two brothers and a sister aged in their 50s and 60s.

All three victims who died belonged to the Carabinieri military police.

Arrests and Aftermath

Two individuals were arrested at the location and one more individual who escaped following the explosion was apprehended shortly later. All three have been admitted to medical facility.

The blast could be noticed as far as 3 miles distant and photographs from the location displayed the structure reduced to a mass of wreckage.

“This is a time for grieving,” stated the Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi, who mentioned that previous tries had been made to displace the brother and sister trio in the earlier times.

Background and Motive

The president of the region of Veneto, President Zaia, stated the farmhouse was under an eviction order due to financial obligations accumulated by the property owners.

Mediators had been dispatched to talk with the brothers and sister who had secured themselves into the property. When the Carabinieri reached the location shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators suspect a family member caused the explosion.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” local police chief the police commander told news outlets.

A gas canister had been ignited, and the blast immediately struck our officers,” he said.

Incendiary devices were also found at the site, the minister stated.

Impact Assessment

Injured individuals by the blast included an additional 11 personnel of the military police as well as three members of national police and a fire services member.

According to the Verona prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a poor condition and had no electricity.

The prosecutor believed the explosion had happened on a floor above the entrance and informed reporters it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Shortly before the blast, he revealed members had “detected a whistling noise, probably the propane tanks being activated”.

Community Reaction

“We all knew the situation was dire,” nearby inhabitants informed Italian media, mentioning that the family members had earlier warned to “blow themselves up” rather than leave the house.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

Minister of Defence Guido Crosetto united with other political leaders in honoring the three officers who had been killed in the line of duty.
