An National Colour Scheme and Iconic Logo

The updated livery features a patriotic palette to echo the national flag and will be applied on GBR trains, at railway stations, and across its online presence.

Interestingly, the logo is the recognisable double-arrow symbol historically used by the national rail network and originally designed in the mid-20th century for the former state operator.

A Rollout Plan

The introduction of the new look, which was developed by the department, is expected to take place gradually.

Travellers are expected to start spotting the freshly-liveried services on the national network from spring next year.

Throughout December, the design will be showcased at prominent railway stations, such as London Bridge.

The Path to Public Ownership

The legislation, which will enable the formation of Great British Railways, is currently progressing through the legislative process.

The administration has argued it is bringing back into public ownership the railways so the service is "run by the people, working for the public, not for private shareholders."

GBR will unify the operation of passenger trains and tracks and signals under a unified structure.

The department has said it will unify seventeen different entities and "eliminate the frustrating red tape and poor accountability that hinders the railways."

Digital Services and Existing Public Control

The launch of Great British Railways will also feature a new app, which will allow users to check schedules and reserve tickets absent booking fees.

Passengers with disabilities users will also be have the option to use the application to book assistance.

A number of franchises had previously been taken into public control under the outgoing administration, such as Northern.

There are now 7 train operators now in public control, accounting for about a one-third of passenger trips.

In the last twelve months, South Western Railway have been brought into public ownership, with more expected to be added in the coming years.

Official and Sector Comments

"This is more than a paint job," commented the Transport Secretary. It signifies "a new railway, shedding the problems of the previous system and dedicated entirely on delivering a reliable service for the public."

Industry figures have welcomed the government's commitment to bettering services.

"We will carry on to work closely with all stakeholders to ensure a successful changeover to Great British Railways," one executive noted.
